Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in employing replay technology.

Video review systems will make its debut at Wimbledon this year.

Competitors are granted the ability to challenge certain calls made by the official, echoing the protocol currently in place at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move follows just a year after the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Notably, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative incident took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire watched a video and determined Draper was guilty of interference, granting the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another innovation at The Championships this year will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves situations where fans have occasionally been unsure if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
