Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for several hours when dozens of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and near the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that these practices become economically unsustainable and present no risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Recent incidents in nearby states have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
