The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Announce a New Divinity, Labeling it Their Largest RPG Yet

The speculation around The Game Awards has been intense, especially after presenter Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic photo of a strange statue. The secret is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is working on a brand-new Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was showcased with a daring trailer packed with memorable imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very unleashing of hell.

A Different Direction

Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian clarified that a third Original Sin game to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not on the cards right now.

That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This choice of words hints that the team might be building a real-time experience rather than another turn-based title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is widely praised and arguably it pioneered the contemporary revival of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are defined by intricate stories, branching plots, and flexible progression—elements that later found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is familiar fare, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust granted to the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is full of niche playthroughs you can achieve with a particular class or origin with a personal story.

The series is also notoriously permissive, enabling players to experiment in narrative and gameplay. Most missions can be solved in diverse methods, often in lateral fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by using the world itself in a clever way.

More to Come

It is precisely these elements that lead fans and critics to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, players can get ready for another adventure in this legendary franchise.
