Pat Cummins Poised for a Key Part in the Ashes

Test match action

The pace bowler has secured 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chief selector George Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series set to start on November 21 in Perth.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and felt positive about his chances of participating.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and there are permutations around that, not just the physical problem, but further aspects," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a significant role. Hopefully from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand last month after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of back injuries, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the contest.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the opening match as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the starting games in any case. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
