Roughly fifty automobiles have been smeared with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German city of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Automobiles, walls and postal boxes were marked, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they announced in a release.
Police say they were contacted during the night on Wednesday night, when a resident noticed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued substance.
The substance had been placed in the pattern of a Nazi symbol, they reported.
Police then found multiple other marked automobiles and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
These symbols are banned in Germany under legislation outlawing the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Law enforcement say preliminary tests suggest the liquid was likely blood from a person.
"Currently there is no indication as to its origin; officials are not yet aware of any physical harm in relation with the incident," they added.
City officials stated they were trying "to solve the case" and have appealed to the residents for tips.
A senior official stated the vandalism made him stunned and required to be addressed promptly.
"This event hits the core of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the far-right violent incident five years ago," he wrote on social media, recalling the killing of nine victims by a shooter aiming at individuals of migrant background in 2020.
